Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a procedure used to treat spider veins. Sclerotherapy involves an injection with a very fine needle of a salt solution into the vein which irritates the blood vessel lining, causing it to swell and stick together. The vessel then turns into scar tissue that fades from view, so that original ‘spider’ appearance is no longer visible.

There may be mild discomfort during the injection and a cramping feeling for one to two minutes. The number of veins injected during one procedure varies depending on the size and location of the veins. There is virtually no down time, and patients may go back in most usual activities, except that vigorous physicial activity must be avoided for three weeks.
