Subcision is a process used to smooth the rolling scars which may result from severe acne. It involves separating the superficial skin tissue of the scar from the deeper scar tissue. This is achieved using a very small needle which enters the skin at an angle a centimeter or so away from the scar and a forward and backwards motion separates the fibrous tissue in between the superficial and deep layers. This allows the blood to pool under the affected area, eventually causing the deep rolling scar to level off with the rest of the skin area. The second part of the treatment is to smooth the skin surface and this may be achieved by laser resurfacing, microdermabrasion or chemical peels.
