Vitamins

Vitamins are essential substances that cannot be manufactured by the body. We need small amounts of vitamins for growth and development. Without vitamins the body cannot survive. There are two types of vitamins:

Fat soluble (A, D, E and K) these are found mainly in meat, fish and dairy products. They are transported around the body in fat and can be stored in the liver and fatty tissues and therefore do not need to be replaced every day.

Water soluble vitamins (B, C and folic acid) these are found mainly in meat, fish, fruit, vegetables and wholegrains. They are transported around the body in water and cannot be stored and should therefore be replaced daily.

Adequate vitamins should be provided by a balanced diet but supplements may be needed to boost requirements. Topical vitamins should be applied for skin health as adequate amounts are not delivered to the skin from food alone.
